Rock Laureate

So last night I got to see Jackson Browne for the first time on PBS's sound stage.  It was awesome.  His music was rich, his lyrics were poignant and inspiring all at the same time.  Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it.  But not only did I enjoy his performance, the musicians and vocalist that he performed with were incredible.  The two female vocalist were powerful and expressive, playing a prominent role in the show.  The guitarist was very skilled.  He was focused and involved, yet he was professional and not acting like a Gene Simmons wannabe.  He let his playing speak and the music carry the show.  The man playing the keys was a great organist and vocalist.  He was subtle and classy, provided a great foundation, but did a great job with his solos as well.  Overall, the performance was excellent and made me want to add him as an influence on my musical journey.

I am doing a lot more music writing these days as I continue service Water's Edge in a musical capacity.  I really enjoy it, and never would have thought I would ever has an opportunity to be a musician.  I still don't know for sure if this is my life's calling and in some sense I think that limits my ability to pursue this with the kind of tenacity I would like to.  But, seeing performances like Jackson Borwne's reminds me of the power of music and it's ability to community 'a glimpse of beauty and glory.'

O God, whom saints and angels delight to worship in heaven:
Be ever present with your servants
who seek through art and music to perfect the praises
offered by your people on earth;
and grant to them even now glimpses of your beauty,
and make them worthy at length
to behold it unveiled for evermore;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
AMEN
