As a kid I never really liked salad, although my mom tells me that when I was a baby we would go to restaurants and the first thing she would do is order a salad and that would keep me quiet for awhile. But, I distinctly remember that the only thing I liked about salads, as a kid, was picking off the ham and croutons, leaving my poor grandmother's salad looking dry and leafy. But, she would always, though reluctantly, give me the good stuff. But over the past 5 years the thought of a a good salad often tickles my taste-buds and moves my body into action preparing the perfect salad.
So what is the perfect salad. First, it starts with the lettuce. I choose to use romaine lettuce and to carefully cut out the hearts which to me have a bitter taste. Or, most often I will use baby spinach, although the thought of eating anything baby seems somewhat distasteful. Next, and the most exciting part for me are the toppings. Now these all depend on what you are eating with the salad, the meal that it is going with. However, if you are just eating it as a meal then there are different considerations here. So here is a list I have prepared to help anyone looking for the perfect salad:
w/ steak
- Romaine lettuce or fresh Iceberg
- chopped Vidalia sweet onions
- garlic croutons - the big kind
- blue cheese dressing
w/ Italian
- Romaine or fresh Iceburg
- small garlic crutons
- 2 slices of pepperoni
- black olives
- 1 pickled banana pepper
- a good thousand island dressing
by itself
- baby spinach
- mozzarella
- dried cranberries or fresh strawberries
- peanuts
- red wine vinaigrette
The Perfect Salad!!!
